Daily Question for March 23, 2010

In chapter 12, Jonas dreams of the sled-ride down the hill. However, in his dream, "it seemed as if there was a destination: a something--he could not grasp what--that lay beyond the place where the thickness of snow brought the sled to a stop." (Page 88) What do you think that "something beyond" is? Is it somehow tied in with the "seeing beyond" that Jonas possesses, or are they separate?

  1. I think that it would be something that would help Jonas discover what was causing him to see things change when they were not really changing like the apple and his friends hair. If Jonas could have discovered the "something" was he probably would have had a way better picture about what was going on and what it is starting to change his life causing him to be away from his family and friends for long periods of time, from the start of school to late in the afternoon(long after his friends go home from their assignments).

  2. Okay, so if I get you right, Handz, then the "something" is like a key that will unlock the mystery of why Jonas is different, and maybe give him something to hold on to that will make it all worth while....

  3. I think that there might be a settlement that is beyond the snow of many people that would not be anything like what their utopian society that he lives in. Yes I do believe it is tied into what he is seeing and maybe it will be revealed to him later.

  4. I think its about jonas seeing colors, what I mean is that the objects that jonas describes to the giver about them changing is him being able to see new colors,Or seeing beyond.

  5. Seeing beyond is being able to see the different colours. I think the something beyond on Jonas's sled ride is like a village that isn't a utopian society and he feels a yearning to go there.

  6. That something beyond would be freedom. The society is so strict that you have been rased to never do anything that they would look down upon. or that something beyond could be death, finally you are free. Seeing beyond is seeing colour, emotion, or animals. It unlocks Jonases mind so he can think freely and for himself

  7. A lot of bang-on ideas here. Colour allows Jonas to perceive his world in a whole new way, opening him to new possibilities that had always been hidden to him. It would be like going from being a 2 dimensional being into a three dimensional one. You gain a new world, but lose the old one.

  8. I think tht Jonas is starting to diconnect from the community in ways I cannot discribe starting with the ability to "see beyond" and now with reciving the feeling of freedom and unlocking his mind to the other things around him other then his perfect world.
