Question for March 16, 2010

For Jonas and Lily, animals such as elephants and bears are thought to be "imaginary". Obviously, there are no animals at all in this community. If you could bring back one animal into the community, which animal would you choose? Why? How do you think having animals would change the community?

  1. I would probably reintroduce cows for their milk and meat. They just need feed and water and to be milked regularly. Also cheese and yogurt could be produced. having animals probably wouldn't affect the community that much but it would influence food and create one or two more jobs. Does not having animals mean they don't eat meat often or are they vegetarian?

  2. Good question, Coatez 13, and Lowry does not say that I can find. Let's keep our eyes open for any indication!

  3. Can this animal be imaginary or does it have to be real? If it was real it probably would be a dog for good companionship and a dog is obedient and would fit into the community well because they would obey orders too. Plus dogs are smart and can get into a rhythm and would do its job over and over again. If it was imaginary it would be a Three Headed Dog cause it would be the exact same but it would be cool cause it had three heads! XD

  4. Oh and plus it wouldn't change the community they would have a dog or two dogs (male and female) per family it would also give a job or two for the community! XD

  5. Yes, dogs are are very social. They were the first domesticated animal. I do not think that was a mistake. They compliment humanity so well.

  6. I think that it should be a cat or a dog because they are both animals that are great to have around and it is easy to take care of them, if it was a cat then all they would have to do is feed it, clean its litterbox, and give it affection. If it was a dog you would need to play with it, walk it, and feed it. I would choose a dog though because they are more loyal and they great to have around. I think that it is strange that they live in a community where there are no animals except for birds. That is if there are any birds? I couldn't even imagine what it would be like growing up in a community without at least one animal.

  7. I would change the community though so that they don't have to have only one dog I would make a rule thet they can have as many of whatever type of animal they want so it is not just dogs in the community but I would make it so animals that could harm humans very badly wouldn't be allowed like snakes and bears, etc

  8. I would choose a dog or a cat because they are such good pets. I would probably choose a dog though, because they are more social than cats. Cats can be very aloof. In order to keep with the pattern of the book there would be one dog per family unit, and they would have to apply for it like they do for their children. Having animals would change the community because you become more responsible when you care for a pet. Having a pet also teaches you how to love. Learning to love would change the community because people seem to be taught to live without real love, even in the family units. I think that the reason for this is that if you love, then you can also feel grief, loss, anger, and resentment. Those feelings aren't welcome in a Utopian society so there can't be love either.

  9. Wow! Great observations, Becky! And you are tight, love can turn to grief which would be a definite no-no in a society striving for perfection. Thanks for the comments!

  10. I would introduce some monkeys. Monkeys are fun creatures and wouldn't really cause trouble, maybe some mischief but not lots of trouble. They probably wouldn't really influence the community but maybe give a chance for some people to have pets since they cannot have more than two children.

  11. Bad-Newz, you have chosen my favorite animal! I think monkeys would add a lot of character to the community. And they would be a cool addition so long as they were not the ones coming out of "Jumanji"!

  12. But if they were trying to be a utopian society monkeys might not be the best animal.

  13. If i could reintroduce an animal I would choose A zebra, beacuse i think it would be interesting to se a zebra when there is no colour, even shades, its all just gray, so basically its a gray horse XD. Having animals in the community would change it because it would show a new freedom, but animals would never be reintroduced beacuse of the strict and efficient lifestyle

  14. I would probally chose to reintroduce a dog or a cat becaus they are loyal and allways there for you like a bestfriend. The reason the they would change the community is because the pets would be loyal and loving no matter what, but some problems are 1) if one pet was over protective something bad could happen and 2) Someone could develope a allergy to fur so they would most likely not be the animals to reintorduce.

  15. Even more important is that a pet would reintroduce the notion of love and caring to the community
