Daily Question for March 25, 2010

After Jonas receives the memory of Christmas, he begins to understand love. When he talks about the memory with the Giver, he admits that he likes the feeling of love and wishes that they still had that emotion. However, he also adds, "I do understand that it wouldn't work very well. And it 's much better to be organized the way we are now. I can see that it was a dangerous way to live."

What do you think Jonas is talking about? What is the danger in loving others?

  1. Jonas is talking about understanding how the community functions. Adding love to the community would bring about tonnes of other emotions. No matter how much jonas likes the feeling he knows that it would just lead to otehr things, and with the addition of soemthing out of the ordianry, it could throw the whole idea into chaos. The danger would be, adding 1 emotion would lead to others, people cant feel love and nothing at all, the would also have to feel pain joy, just emotion in general. Since the comunity is so efficient, so gray, so emotionless and colour less, Love just doesnt have its place

  3. I think what Jonas is talking about is that people aren't aloud to get really attached to people like showing love because the word is meaningless and people are only allowed to say "Do you enjoy me" or "Do you take pride in my accomplishments" his parents say that the word love had become obsolete.

  4. Yes his parents would say that Handz! And that leads to another question. Would they even recognize it if it was given to them?

  5. I think Jonas see that love would not only bring that emotion into the comunity be its opposite hatred and when one person would be love another would be hated. and also if there is love it would be destroyed when they have their spouses chosen for them. there would also be the element of jealousy that would come with love cause two people could be in love then another person could be jealous of it or would love one of the people in the relationship and not be loved back which would also bring sadness. XD

  6. I think Jonas is talking about people getting hurt from having love in their lives. It would also bring with it other emotions like sadness, pain, and anger.

  7. Maybe Jonas Realizes that love in a community can bring about feelings such as heartbreak and depression. The results of these emotions could be as simple as failing school or as serious as suicide.

  8. If the community lets one emotion slide then that would end up having people choose who thier friends are and their spouse are. That would also leed to other emotions like jelousy or other bad emotions. Jonas feels that choosing what he does in his life would be dangerous, because what if he Chooses wrong.

  9. If there is the emotion love, then there will also be a lot of other bad emotions like hate, envy, and jealousy. You can't have the good without the bad, you need to decide for yourself whether the good will be worth all of the bad. Jonas sees this and thinks that in order to be safe he would sacrifice love.

  10. Awesomw comments, everyone! You are all right too; love opens us up to all the emotions. Prominent is loss. And, as you have seen, the community is very keen to shield themselves from that loss. The elderly and others who do not "fit in" are "released" and that is all. There is little loos, little real suffering.

  11. i think he is talking about the danger that comes with loving someone like having your heart broken and sadness from a loss of a loved one without love it would be easier to not feel sadness

  12. I believe that Jonas is meaning the pain and the hurt that comes with wonderful feeling of love. Such a small word but it stands for so much more then a powerful feeling but also for pain, suffering, and healing.

  13. Without love, maybe there is no reason to change or grow--there is no real inspiration...
