Daily Question for March 24, 2010

Once Jonas begins to see colours, he becomes angry that he cannot have them all the time. For Jonas, the colours offer a kind of freedom he had never had before: the ability to choose. Soon, Jonas is often angry, even at his goupmates, "that they were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on."

Why do you think Jonas is angry that his friends are satisfied with the simple lives they lead? He is not really blaming them for being colour-blind, but he is upset that they are blind to something else. What do you think it is?

  1. i think he's mad cause they are blind to not knowing of what's around them the colour that is on the land and he is just frustrated that no one can see what he sees i bet he's thinking how much there are missing out.

  2. I think he was angry because since no one else can see the colour then he is all alone being the only one that can experiance these things and no one else can. I think that the thing that Jonas is upset about is that no one can ever see what he is seeing.

  3. I think that Jonas is upset because he sees what the out side world actually looks like.I would be pretty upset that I'm the only one who can see the wonderful things that the "other world" looks like and be the only one who can see it.But Jonas was told that being the reciecer wouldn't be a walk in the park. But then again Jonas is only 12.

  4. I think that he is mad that all of his friends and family have no idea about a whole other world and history of things that no one has any idea about except for him and I think it kind of makes him angry that he can not tell anyone. I also think that he thinks that the community is blind to the fact that the leaders of the community have so many secrets that they havent told anyone about.

  5. I think he's ticked off that nobody can see color except for him and the giver.I think "the something else" is everything around the community that the normal people in the community can't see and therefore can't experience.

  6. Jonas is angry at his friends lives because theyarent able to comprehend what emotion is,what colour is, what freedom is. Theirlives have been so precisley monitored and so carefully layed out. He is the only one who is different. In the community everything is degraded, you cant love(only "care") and stronger words like Love, Hate, Despise are all used out of context, and some are considered cliched. He is upset beacuse nomatter what he does, he cant change the way they are. He is alone in his ability. the people of the community dont think for themselves. In order for anyone to see what Jonas was feeling, they would need the memories. Jonas knows that he will be stuck forever with all of the memories being angry at society because they cant see what he does.

  7. Yes, and so long as his community is limited, Jonas too will be forced to be. He is caged by the boundaries of what everyone else can comprehend.

  8. I think he is mad that his friends are completely oblivious to a whole other world right in front of them that they can not see or feel! And i think he is very upset that the elders of the community are hiding everything from every one around them.

  9. I think that Jonas is upset because they wouold open their mind to the things around them and also that they are content with pushed around, being told what to do, where to go and even who you live with and marry, and that the elders are hiding another life beyond their own.

  10. Good insights,Chatter, but do you think that the Elders even know the difference? There have been many generations of living this way and the Elders. themselves are simply doing what they believe to be best, according to what they have been taught.
