Daily Question for March 30, 2010

As Jonas flees the community, he thinks of all the rules he has broken. He knows that if he is caught he will be condemned. However, the community cannot "release" Jonas. Why? What do you think would happen to Jonas if he was caught?

  1. I think that Jonas can't be released because he has been given a lot of memories and if he is released all the memories that have been given to him will be given back to the community and the elders wouldn't want that. I think that if he was caught then Gabriel would be released meaning he would be given a shot that would kill him like the shots done on animals that have to be put down and Jonas would probably be isolated from the rest of the community and he wouldn't be able to see his friends or family ever again.

  2. Forced to live with his memories, eh? No doubt he would be isolated and alone too. But then what about any new Receiver Jonas would be expected to train when he grew old like the Giver? I wonder how the community would handle that....

  3. This would be a very difficult choice for the elders. Since Jonas holds about 70 percent of the memmories. He couldn't be released because all those memmories would be like a burden on the people in the community. I would have to agree with Hanz of God about the whole isolation bit. But maybe they will just find a different Receiver/Giver. Jonas and the Giver were talking about a six that has pale eyes like Jonas. So maybe the elders will chose her instead.

  4. They probably would beat him a lot, and then isolate him. They would wait until the six was old enough then they would have Jonas give her all the memories, then once he gave them all away they would release him.

  5. The community can't release Jonas because if they do all the memories that Jonas has will come back to all the members of the community. I think that the elders would throw him in jail then after awhile they would take him out of jail and isolate from any humans and had to live all by himself for many many years.

  6. First off I didnt even think of the fact that jonas couldnt be released. If he were released the memories would leak out and the town would be like what happened with rosemary but worse. Jonas inadvertantly put himself in a position to live however he wants. I dont think much would happen to Jonas. After he gives away the memories he gets released, end of story. It wouldn't be much of a deal just so long as they can find someone else. The only thing special about Jonas is that he runs away, unlike the Giver(s) from countless years ago.

  7. How is isolating Jonas away from the community any different than the life he was leading prior to running away? No real difference there. Unfortunately for the community, Jonas, unlike his predecessors, no longer believes in the sameness and pain-free life of the community. I doubt that he would play along and train another to take his place either.

  8. they cannot release jonas because he contains a year worth of important memories and i think if he got caught they would torture him very harshly!

  9. The Elders wouldn't release Jonas right away but I belive that they would make him give the Giver back the memories and then release him

  10. He wouldnt have to play along. It would be easy enough to make him give the memories away.

  11. The people of the community have no emotion, they kill people with no resolve whats to say they just cant tie up Jonas, let his hands free and put someone else. They could torture him enough till a memorie came out, 1 step at a time. They are like zombies, relentlessly doind whatever has to be done, they could loose an arm and a leg, as long as the brain ( the elders in this case) are fine they can live on.

  12. Do you think so Squig? And yet this is a community that would do anything to avoid pain. Do you think they would torture Jonas to protect themselves? That is vastly different than "disciplining" a three-year-old (Asher). I wonder how torturing an almost-adult would change the community, even if they did not want to be changed. Good food for thought!

  13. I absolutely think they would torture jonas, Asher mispronounced something wrong and got slapped. Jonas ran away from the community, he broke so many rules i dont think torture would be above them. It wouldnt change the community either, there are other communities, get a few people in secorite and everything is fine again.
