Daily Question for March 29, 2010

At the end of chapter 17, Lily tries to joke around that there are twins of everyone in the community in other communities, or Elsewhere. While Lily is not trying to be serious, she is inadvertently pointing out something important about her world. What is the significance of her statement?

  1. In her world there is no twins. The community wont allow twins because they think that it would be too hard to tell the difference. I think Lily wants to have a tiwn.

  2. Lilie is pointing out that nobody is the exact same in their community. She's saying that it would be way to hard to tell people apart if there were twins in the community.

  3. Do you think the people in the community are all that different? They all have to wear the same things as their groupmates for their ages. They all have to follow the strict rules with precision. They all have to wear their hair in similar ways for their sex. It's kind of like they are....TWINS!

  4. It almost seems like they are all twins at times, or more like robots. They all have the same clothes, have the same hairstyles, and celebrate their birthdays at the same time. What I don't get is why they don't want twins in the community, because the whole community is about fitting in and sameness, so what is the problem with having people actually be exactly the same?

  5. Every one has to be similar for the community to work. I even one person fails to fulfill his duties the community as a whole fails. The sugnifigance is the fact that they are all (in general) the same. Every one after they are born are in their own little group, they all get a give away the same things at the same time. And when they were born doesnt matter past what number you get, just another way to get everyone to be the same.

  6. I agree with you Becky. I don't get that either. Maybe it is Lowry's use of irony here?

  7. I think whats significant about this is that the community is trying so hard to achieve sameness yet when two exactly same people are born they release one...

  8. The community tries so hard to be alike... but yet if twins were in the community then they could get mixed up because the parents wouldnt be able to tell one from another and without the bond of love it wiould be very hard to tell two tots apart who couldn't talk and say who they were

  9. Good insights, to both of you, Chatter and Bad-Newz! I think you are both right. And I had not considered that loving each child as an individual could be the reason why they would not be able to tell them apart. You may be on to something there!
